Lime kilns, mills and quarries

In Gorbeia you can still contemplate the mark left by humans on the landscape with the constructions for traditional trades such as lime kilns, mills and quarries.

  • Lime kilns: These are structures used in the past for the production of lime from the limestone of the area. El Calero de San Justo is a beautiful place to see a lime kiln.

  • Mills: On the banks of streams and rivers there are still traditional mills, which were used to grind cereals and other agricultural products with hydraulic power. Most of them are abandoned and some have been restored, such as the Errotabarri, Sarria, Goiuri or Ibargutxi mills, which are well worth a visit.

  • Quarries: Gorbeia has a rich geology and it is possible to find stone quarries in the region. These quarries have historically been used for the extraction of stone and other construction materials. Some have been abandoned and others are still in operation and can be visited, such as the Murua Quarries, which have been converted into a recreational area.
