Ethnographic Museum
of Orozko
Explore this museum, located in an 18th century palace house, to learn about the peculiarities of Basque traditions and culture and life in Gorbeia.
Ideal for all ages due to its interactive exhibition, this museum has audiovisual aids and models.
The visit begins on the ground floor where you will learn about the Orozko Valley: prehistory with its caves, the Middle Ages and its castles and the characteristics of the Basque language that was and still is spoken in the valley.
You will discover the most emblematic buildings in the area: churches and chapels, ancestral homes, palaces, tower-houses and farmhouses.
The first floor is devoted to traditional life in the valley and the importance of the river as a source of energy and its use in the numerous forges and mills. It also deals with the means of communication, its social organisation and its religiosity, themes that are always present in the life of its people.
You will see curious tools they used for agriculture, how they baked bread or how they obtained honey.
The human presence in the high areas of Gorbea is the theme of the first floor. Here you will learn about ancestral professions: woodcutters, charcoal burners and shepherds, and you will see a Latxa sheep with its shepherd dog.
You will also learn how to protect your house as they did and still do in the Orozko valley and with great sadness we will show you the last Gorbea bear. You will hear the word Kirkiñausi for the first time and you will be surprised to see Neberabaltz, a refrigerator created by nature.
This museum is also Orozko's tourist information office, where you can find out about all the activities and suggestions for visiting Gorbeia.
